Eddie Howe could consider looking at 29-year-old Portuguese playmaker Xeka, who was offered to Newcastle United.
According to Team Talk, Eddie Howe could have an option to bring in a new midfielder now, as the club were offered the services of Xeka. The 29-year-old Portuguese playmaker remains a free agent after leaving Stade Rennes in the summer, as the Magpies face difficulties in midfield.
Eddie Howe’s problems compounded since last weekend’s win over Arsenal, as Newcastle Unite succumbed to back-to-back defeats in all competitions. A midweek loss to Borussia Dortmund was followed by a dismal performance against Bournemouth.
There are lots of problems brewing with fitness within Howe’s squad. For instance, the injury to Sven Botman has significantly weakened their backline, while the Sandro Tonali ban has already started showing disappointing signs.
The Italian will probably return at the start of the next season, but before that, Howe must manoeuvre through important competitions without a key midfielder. Some reports have linked Newcastle with Kalvin Phillips, but in truth, Howe might look to bring a player with a more creative presence who can slot into his midfield setup where he utilises three players.
Lyon’s Rayan Cherki remains linked, but the more significant issue comes with his asking price. Lyopn are not about to entertain offers for anything less despite the playmaker no longer being in their plans. Hence, the financial struggle to fund a move may take the Magpies away from Cherki in January.
Now, free agent Xeka was offered to the Magpies in a bid to get a deal for the 29-year-old Portuguese playmaker. He left Rennes during the summer and remains a free agent, which could benefit the Magpies financially. Xeka was also on the radar of other Premier League clubs but still remains a free agent.
However, more than money, Howe would want a player with total quality that slots into his system. Finances are undoubtedly necessary, but not the end game here for the manager. The 29-year-old Portuguese playmaker certainly can be looked at by Newcastle United, but there are doubts whether they will take up the offer to sign him.
Newcastle United are yet to decide on their priority position for January, as there’s a dire need to sign a new midfielder and centre-back. As for Xeka, he may have to wait longer to find his next project, as Newcastle United are unlikely to make a move for him.
