Newcastle United are eying a move for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as Eddie Howe looks to address a problem area of his squad.
According to Sport via Sport Witness, Newcastle United are back in the chase for Andreas Christensen and could attempt to sign the Danish international in January. The 27-year-old La Liga ace has become an essential player for Barcelona, which complicates any move away from Camp Nou.
When Chelsea lost Andreas Christensen in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer, there were many other teams, including a few from the Premier League, keen to sign him. He ended up joining Barcelona in what was a chaotic summer at Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s choice has already paid dividends, with the 27-year-old La Liga ace making himself an essential player under Xavi Hernandez. The Danish star has put in some steady performances for the Vcatalans and is widely considered their best central defender in the present scenario.
Despite only spending more than a year in Spain, the Danish star already has tremendous interest from England, including Manchester United, who are keen. The Red Devils are also joined by Newcastle United in a big way, with the report claiming the Magpies wanted him during the summer window.
Eddie Howe wants to address a problem area of his squad as he has depleted depth in the central defensive position. In a recent cup game against Manchester United, he chose to play six fullbacks and kept all his remaining central defenders on the bench.
The loss of Sven Botman to injury has really shown how thin their options at the back are. Currently, Howe relies on Fabian Schar and forgotten club captain Jamal Lascelles to anchor the backline and would want solutions in the January window.
Most reports have claimed Newcastle United needs a midfielder on priority, but Howe would also want to prioritise a midfielder. Looking at Christensen makes total sense for the Magpies, but there are complications in cracking any deal.
They are also reportedly keen on Jules Kounde, who’s also Christensen’s Barcelona teammate. Both those players, especially the 27-year-old La Liga ace, are more than happy to stay put in Catalonia, and Barcelona have no interest in losing the Dane.
Hence, things could get complicated for Newcastle in the pursuit of Christensen in January. Not only will they have to make a massive offer, which, in line with some FFP problems, seems complicated, but they will also have to convince the player to swap the warmth of Catalonia for the cold of Tyneside.
