Manchester United have reportedly joined the list of suitors for Chelsea outcast Trevoh Chalobah ahead of the January window.
According to Teamtalk, Manchester United are among the suitors of Chelsea’s fringe defender, Trevoh Chalobah.
It has been a very difficult time for Chalobah, as his season has been hampered by a hamstring injury, and the prospects of a long-term future at the club look bleak at the moment. A versatile defender, Chalobah looked to be a utility asset for the Blues when he first burst onto the scene under former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.
The Cobham graduate, who has been at the club since the age of nine, was also a regular fixture last season, but he has been on the periphery since Mauricio Pochettino took charge at Stamford Bridge.
In total, the 24-year-old has made 63 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions since making his senior debut in 2021 and has won a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea in his time there.
With Wesley Fofana picking up a serious ACL injury that is expected to keep him out for the majority of the season, there was a chance that Chalobah could be the Frenchman’s replacement.
Chelsea, however, decided to go to AS Monaco to sign Axel Disasi, who has played every minute in the Premier League thus far this season. This has left Chalobah surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
Despite his continued stance to stay and fight for his place, there is no vision for him within Pochettino’s project. As such, Chalobah will now look for a new opportunity that gives him good chances at regular top-level football.
The prospect of a move to Nottingham Forest was on the table in the summer, while he was also strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
The Pensioners are still looking to sell the academy graduate when the window reopens in January, and more clubs from England and abroad are now going to come forward with interest as we head towards the January window. As per Team Talk, a race between some of Europe’s elite clubs is brewing for the defender’s signature.
Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund have allegedly spoken with Chalobah’s agents about the prospect of a move there in the new year. Yet both Bundesliga sides would face competition from Manchester United, who are also keeping tabs on Chalobah’s situation closely and plotting a move to keep him in the Premier League.
It’s understood that the West Londoners want around £45 million, despite him having not featured in a single competitive match for the club this term. Furthermore, Chalobah is understood to be keen to stay in England if he can, while a move to another top-six side like United would be “hard to refuse.”
It’s still unclear whether Erik ten Hag’s side will engage in a bidding war for the in-demand English defender. Given the Old Trafford outfit’s limited budget in the coming window, they would be dependent on outgoings in order to make any significant winter deals possible.
