Newcastle United considering Amadou Onana swoop

Newcastle United are reportedly keeping tabs on Everton midfield star Amadou Onana.

According to Calciomeratoweb, Premier League side Newcastle United are considering a January swoop for Everton star Amadou Onana.

This comes in the aftermath of Italian international Sandro Tonali’s eight-month ban for gambling. The Magpies ace only arrived at St. James’ Park last summer and has made a telling difference in the middle of the park.

Losing Tonali is a big blow for Eddie Howe, especially given the increased competition for the top four spots this season. The 2024 winter transfer window offers Newcastle a chance to rectify the issue, and this is where Onana comes in.

The Belgian midfielder has been one of Everton’s standout performers since completing a £33 million move last year. And he will have a big role to play should the Toffees stave off relegation yet again. There is only so much he can achieve at Goodison Park, and a transfer to Newcastle can open new avenues and ambitions.

However, the 22-year-old is more of a defensive midfielder rather than a forward facilitator like Tonali. In that aspect, it is not a like-for-like replacement. But then, having someone like Onana in the middle of the park could take the shackles off Bruno Guimaraes as far as offensive responsibilities are concerned.

Whether Everton are ready to lose a player midway through the season is debatable. Either way, Newcastle will need to splash serious cash to even gain consideration on Merseyside. The Magpies cannot afford to dilly-dally either. They will face more competition from teams around them for a top spot this season. More so, a serious run in Europe or the other cups will also depend on how well Howe can rotate his squad.

However, Onana is not the only Premier League player on Newcastle’s radar. Manchester United star Scott McTominay, Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Fulham ace Joao Palhinha are also being considered. One thing is for sure, St James Park will certainly see a new midfielder take to the field if the club has its way.
