Liverpool might poach Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips, whose move worth £45 million has not worked out.
According to a report by Sky Sports Deutschland, Kalvin Phillips is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are scouring the market for a defensive midfielder heading into the January transfer window. Meanwhile, the Manchester City flop is also a target for several other European bigwigs.
Kalvin Phillips has seen his stock plummet since joining Manchester City from Leeds United in July 2022. The 27-year-old was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League when he arrived at the Etihad. But the treble winners’ investment worth £45 million has not paid off thus far, with the player failing to stamp his authority.
Things have gone from bad to worse in the first two months of the 2023/24 season, with Phillips managing only 167 minutes of game time across five appearances thus far. Pep Guardiola did not even hand him any start in the absence of Rodri. So, the 27-year-old needs to leave Manchester City to resurrect his stuttering career.
Phillips’s need for a departure has accentuated further by 2024 being the year of the latest edition of the European Championships. So, a January exit is likely, with Manchester City ready to part ways with him. And Liverpool might poach the Premier League champions for the struggling midfielder this coming winter.
Liverpool signed multiple midfielders in the summer transfer window, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo arriving at Anfield. But with Jurgen Klopp not using Endo regularly, the Reds need to land a holding midfielder in January. Several candidates, including Andre, have emerged on Liverpool’s radar.
But Kalvin Phillips is also a viable target for the Merseyside outfit. But Liverpool will face stiff competition from several other bigwigs in the race to sign the English international. Meanwhile, Florian Plettenberg has rebuffed claims that Bayern Munich had contacted his entourage over a possible move.
Recent reports have claimed that Phillips is ready to forego a payoff to leave Manchester City. But the Premier League champions will likely take a big loss on their investment of £45 million when they part ways with him. It will be interesting to see if his career continues as a Liverpool player.
