Manchester City have reportedly joined Barcelona and Chelsea in the race to sign highly-rated Brazilian teenager Gabriel Moscardo from Corinthians.
Manchester City could deliver a major blow to Barcelona and Chelsea’s hopes of signing 18-year-old Corinthians wonderkid Gabriel Moscardo, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes. The Cityzens are keeping close tabs on his situation and could make a move to sign the youngster in the upcoming transfer window.
The 18-year-old midfielder has impressed since moving into the Corinthians first team, with the youth team product tipped for a bright future. The youngster has only made 17 senior appearances so far. But he has already managed to capture the attention of the top European clubs, including Chelsea and Barcelona.
The midfield ace was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the final days of the summer transfer window. But despite interest from the Blues, a deal failed to materialise before the deadline. And if recent reports are anything to go by, Moscardo’s name will continue to be buzzing around Chelsea’s radar when the January transfer window comes around.
As for Barcelona, they want to sign a long-term pivot in 2024, as their financial constraints meant that it would be impossible to do this during the just-past summer transfer window.
Sporting director Deco believes that Moscardo has a “Barcelona profile”, in the sense that he has an imposing physical presence, is capable with both feet, reads the game well, has a lot of personality, and can be an excellent successor to the departed Sergio Busquets, whose role is currently being filled by stop-gap Oriol Romeu.
However, Fichajes reports that Manchester City are one of the clubs to watch in the race for Moscardo. With Kalvin Phillips’s future at the Etihad uncertain, Pep Guardiola and the recruitment team view Moscardo as an important step in the team’s long-term building strategy.
He is someone the club believes is capable of supporting Rodri in the present and competing for a starting position in the future. His current contract with the Brazilian club expires in the summer of 2026 and is valued at around €30 million, which City deems a relatively low price in the current market in what would be a strategic move both in the short and long term.
