Barcelona will reportedly look to sign a midfielder in the 2024 summer transfer window, with Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara emerging as a target.

According to a report by ESPN, Thiago Alcantara is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for midfielders heading into the 2024 summer transfer window. And the Liverpool star has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

Thiago Alcantara has struggled to stamp his authority since joining Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020. The Spanish international arrived at Anfield amid much fanfare and hype after an excellent stint with Bayern Munich. But fitness issues have hampered the experienced midfielder’s Liverpool spell.

Similar issues have surfaced this season, with the 32-year-old yet to turn out for Liverpool thus far. Meanwhile, Thiago’s Liverpool future is uncertain, as he has entered the final year of his contract with the Merseyside club. The situation has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona considering re-signing him.

Turkish clubs were keen on securing Thiago’s services in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, recent reports have linked Saudi Pro League outfits with the veteran midfielder. But the emergence of Barcelona should change the equation considerably, with the race to sign the Liverpool star heating up.

Barcelona bolstered the midfield unit this past summer by signing Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan. But both players are on the wrong side of 30 and cannot feature week-in-week-out in a busy season. So, several midfielders, including Jorginho, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar. And Thiago Alcantara is also a viable target for the Blaugrana.

While Thiago will also be a short-term addition, he will beef up the Barcelona midfield unit considerably. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old might not reject the opportunity to rejoin Barcelona, with reports this past summer suggesting he dreams about representing the Catalan club again. As for Liverpool, the Reds will be powerless to stop the cultured midfielder from leaving.

With Thiago’s future uncertain, it will be interesting to see if he receives an offer from Barcelona in 2024. But for now, the Spanish international will be eager to overcome his fitness issues and return to action as soon as possible.
