Saudi Pro League clubs keen on Thiago Alcantara

Saudi Pro League clubs reportedly remain keen on signing 32-year-old Liverpool ace Thiago Alcantara.

According to Fichajes, Saudi Pro League clubs are interested in making a move for Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Reds’ ace arrived at Anfield from Bayern Munich in 2020 and has made a telling difference in the middle of the park. However, injuries have largely limited his overall impact in red.

Thiago is today the most experienced veteran in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield roster as Liverpool rebuild their squad. While he was linked with an exit earlier this summer, it made sense that the Merseyside club retained him given the names who left the club.

However, Thiago’s contract is up next summer and as of yet, there is no news as to whether he will pen an extension. This has emboldened Saudi clubs who are preparing plans to add to their impressive roster in the windows to come.

Several Liverpool players and legends are currently in the Middle East at various clubs. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho moved to Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ittihad, respectively, while Roberto Firmino signed for Al Ahli after leaving the club in the summer.

Steven Gerrard is the manager at Al-Ettifaq, while former Liverpool attackers Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho are at Al-Nassr and Al-Duhail respectively. Thiago, at 32, isn’t getting any younger and moving to the Pro League could guarantee him a huge paycheque in the twilight of his career.

Liverpool have a really young midfield roster at this moment in time. Dominik Szoboszlai is 22, while Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are 24 and 21, respectively. Stefan Bajcetic is 19, while Curtis Jones is still 22. Only Wataru Endo is over 25, but the Japanese skipper is far from an automatic starter.

Retaining Thiago will help the Reds have a reliable mentor to educate their young stars on and off the field. The Spaniard is not just a serial winner but is a gentleman off the field. He already appears to have taken Bajcetic under his wing and it is in the club’s best interests to retain his services.

However, a move to the Saudi League is a goldmine for players should they opt for it to happen. Whether Thiago is willing to have one more go at European glory in Klopp’s Liverpool 2.0 or is keen to undertake a new challenge remains to be seen.
