Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea will go all out to sign a new striker when the transfer window reopens in January.
According to a report by Football Insider, Chelsea have not had the best of the starts to the new season, and their major concern has been their form in front of goal. As a result, their priority in the winter transfer window will be to sign a new number nine.
The Blues have spent a fortune on new signings since their takeover, but the results on the pitch have not followed. The West London club were expected to return to winning ways in the 2023/24 season after the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino and another spending spree in the summer.
The Blues have only won one Premier League game so far. They have accumulated just five points out of a possible 18 and have found the back of the net just five times.
Their overall game has improved post the arrival of the Argentine manager, but the results are not going their way. And, one of the major reasons is their form in front of their goal. They have not converted their chances and as a result, they have dropped points on the majority of the occasions.
They did sign quite a few forwards in the summer but have not had the impact the fans were hoping for. Christopher Nkunku joined the club for a reported fee of £52 million. But he is yet to make his official debut for the club following the serious injury that he picked up in the pre-season.
The 25-year-old is out until the end of the year. Meanwhile, Nicolas Jackson, who arrived at the club from Villarreal, has only found the back of the net twice. One of his goals came in their recent League Cup game against Brighton.
Jackson is struggling to make an impact, and Pochettino is now desperate to have a new number nine in his ranks. He wants to sign someone who can guarantee him goals. According to recent reports, the Blues could go hard to sign Brentford’s ace striker Ivan Toney.
Meanwhile, the last Chelsea striker who managed to score 20 goals in a Premier League season was Diego Costa who did it back in the 2016/17 season. Last season, their top scorer in the league was Kai Havertz who has left the club to join Arsenal in a big-money move in the summer.
