Arsenal have opened talks with Paulo Vernazza, the agent of Ollie Watkins, over a deal in January as they step up their striker search.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal director Edu Gaspar has opened talks with Paulo Vernazza, the agent of Ollie Watkins, over a potential move in January. The Gunners are reportedly seeking a new striker in January with links to several names, including Ivan Toney.

Arsenal have a good squad to compete on all fronts, but on Sunday, during the north London Derby, their apparent need for a new frontman was crystal clear. Eddie Nketiah started the derby with Gabriel Jesus covering on the left wing, but the Englishman did not have a good game.

Arsenal do have the duo, while Kai Havertz can also fulfil that role if needed, as he started in that position during the Community Shield triumph over Man City. However, they may lack a certain profile of a striker in the side, something Mikel Arteta addressed as the ‘traditional No.9’ that all their rivals currently have in their ranks.

Hence, there were no surprises that Arsenal were heavily linked with Ivan Toney in the last few days. Some are suggesting the Brentford striker is their priority target, but the report insists Arteta may have some doubts over the banned star top suit his system.

Chelsea are also interested in Toney as an option, but the striker reportedly prefers a move to Arsenal if things go his way. However, the Gunners are also keeping their options open with their search and have now added Ollie Watkins to their list of potential targets.

The idea of following the two 27-year-olds shows the Gunners are behind an established frontman to add to their side, with both their contracts ending in 2025. Hence, Arsenal feels there’s a solid chance to sign either, as Edu Gaspar had reportedly opened talks with one Paulo Vernazza, the agent of the Aston Villa star.

Aston Villa are not open to letting Watkins go and are aware of Chelsea’s interest in the 27-year-old Premier League ace. The Midlands side are keen to renew his contract beyond 2025, but talks on the same have been going on for over a year.

The key issue here are Watkins’ demands for a new five-year contract in excess of £150,000-a-week wages; something Villa may have reservations about. Arsenal are in a position to pay that kind of money if needed. Moreover, the 27-year-old Premier League ace is also a self-proclaimed Gunners fan, which could make things smoother if it came down to a choice for the striker.

Hence, this story has legs to it when the January window comes closer. For now, the reports are all about initial talks with agents, which is a regular process. However, if Arsenal want a striker in their prime, there are only a few options within the Premier League, like Watkins or Toney.
