Real Madrid and Manchester City are reportedly still interested in signing 21-year-old Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Gabri Veiga remains the subject of interest from top clubs in Europe. Real Madrid and Manchester City are still keen on signing the 21-year-old despite his shock move to Al-Ahli. The two clubs also considered securing his services in the summer transfer window.
Gabri Veiga is one of the brightest young Spanish midfielders and made his mark for Celta Vigo last season. A graduate of the Galician club’s youth division, he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the 2022/23 season. And the player had the world at his feet this past summer, with several high-profile clubs pursuing him.
Several Premier League clubs, apart from outfits from Italy and Spain, were keen on signing the 21-year-old. And Napoli had been closing in on securing Veiga’s services before a move collapsed. Then came the shock news of the youngster agreeing to join Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli, drawing the ire of Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos.
The Spaniard has turned out twice thus far for the Al-Ahli and will likely be a regular for the Saudi outfit. But the decision to move to Saudi Arabia has surprised many, with few seeing a way to a top club for him. However, the report by Fichajes claims that Real Madrid and Manchester City are still keen.
The last two UEFA Champions League winners were two of the clubs eager to secure Veiga’s services this past summer. But a move did not materialise, with the teams setting their sights on alternatives. However, with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos well into their thirties, Real Madrid will need a long-term replacement.
As for Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne is on the wrong side of 30 and starting to endure some fitness woes. In addition, Bernardo Silva might leave Manchester City after they inserted a release clause worth €50 million in his new contract. So, the continued interest in Gabri Veiga is understandable.

It is unclear how much Al-Ahli will demand to part ways with the 21-year-old next year. The Saudi Pro League outfit might also be reluctant to listen to offers if he succeeds this season. But Real Madrid and Manchester City will likely launch the offensive to sign the Spaniard in 2024.
