Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd.

A report from The Sun claims that Liverpool and Manchester City are eyeing up a move for 27-year-old Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd, who has established himself as a key player for West Ham since joining the club.

The defender was signed for a fee of £30 million, and it remains to be seen whether the two clubs decide to come forward with a concrete proposal to sign him in the coming months. He was recently linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, which did not materialise.

Liverpool need defensive reinforcements, and Aguerd would be a quality acquisition. He could prove to be an upgrade on players like Joel Matip. Matip is in the twilight years of his career, and his injury history has been quite dodgy as well. Liverpool should look to bring in alternatives soon, and the 27-year-old West Ham defender would be a superb investment.

Aguerd is at the peak of his powers right now, and he would certainly improve Liverpool defensively. Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the only reliable defenders at the club right now. So, Liverpool must plug the gaps in their defensive unit if they want to push for the major trophies once again.

On the other hand, Manchester City have a quality squad, and it remains to be seen whether they decide to improve the squad further by signing the 27-year-old West Ham star. Signing a centre-back will be surprising, considering they secured the services of Josko Gvardiol this past summer.

Aguerd has been a key player for club and country over the past year, and he was highly impressive at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well. The 27-year-old was a key member of the side that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup.

The opportunity to play for big clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City can be hard to turn down and the player could be tempted to move on if there is a concrete offer on the table in the coming months. Both clubs have the financial resources to get the deal done, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

West Ham will not want to sell a key player midway through the campaign. So, both clubs will have to wait until the summer transfer window in order to sign him. The 27-year-old defender is well-settled in the Premier League and he could make an immediate impact at Liverpool or Manchester City if the transfer goes through.
