Chelsea, Liverpool, and Newcastle United reportedly failed with approaches to sign Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.
According to a report by Caught Offside, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Newcastle United were interested in Nicolo Barella in the summer transfer window. But Napoli did not want to entertain any offers to part ways with the Italian international. However, they will likely demand £77 million to sell him next year.
Nicolo Barella has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world since joining Inter Milan in July 2019. The Nerazzurri signed him on an initial loan deal from Cagliari before completing a permanent move in July 2020. And the move has worked out for both parties, with the 26-year-old coming leaps and bounds in the last four years.
The Italian international has been a pivotal figure for his club and country for nearly half a decade. He has turned out nearly 200 times for Inter Milan, chipping in with 20 goals and 44 assists. Barella’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with several high-profile clubs showing interest in him. And Chelsea, Liverpool, and Newcastle United were keen on signing him this past summer.
Recent reports have claimed that Newcastle United wanted to secure Barella’s services before zeroing in on Sandro Tonali. And they approached Inter Milan for the player, only for the Serie A giants to rebuff them.
Chelsea and Liverpool were also eager to sign Barella from Inter Milan. The two traditional giants also submitted enquiries for the 26-year-old, only to fail with their approaches. And both Chelsea and Liverpool could have done with a player of Barella’s qualities this season.
While Chelsea lost Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City, Liverpool parted ways with nearly half a dozen midfielders. But both clubs also addressed their midfield issues by signing multiple players, with Liverpool completing a deadline-day signing of Ryan Gravenberch. Meanwhile, Inter Milan will demand around £77 million to part ways with Barella next year.

£77 million is a fair asking price for the Italian international, considering his performance levels and contract duration. But it will be interesting to see if Chelsea, Liverpool, and Newcastle United return for Barella’s signature next year.
