Borussia Dortmund could reportedly try to re-sign Jadon Sancho in January if his relations with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag “remain strained” by then.

According to The Sun, Borussia Dortmund are eyeing a move for Manchester United fringe star Jadon Sancho on loan in January.

The 23-year-old swapped Germany for England in a £73 million deal in the summer of 2021 but has endured a largely disappointing career at Old Trafford. Sancho has struggled to perform at the same level as he did at Dortmund, which has led to frustration.

Now into his third season at Old Trafford, you can count on one hand the impressive performances Sancho has produced for the Red Devils. He has also been benched by England as a result.

Now, his Old Trafford future is in serious doubt after a very public spat with his manager. After leaving Sancho out of the squad for United’s 3-1 away loss to Arsenal on September 3, manager Erik ten Hag raised eyebrows when he claimed that the winger had been left out due to his poor performances in training. Sancho, though, did not take the criticism well.

He hit back at Ten Hag with a public response on social media. The England international urged fans to “don’t believe everything you read” and suggested that Ten Hag’s comments were “completely untrue,” while also stating that It “isn’t fair” that he has been United’s “scapegoat” for a long while.

After falling down the pecking order behind Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho this campaign, Sancho could find himself pushed further down Ten Hag’s wing selection order. Amad Diallo is yet to make a comeback from a preseason injury, and Facundo Pellistri has remained at Old Trafford past the transfer window. So, it looks increasingly likely that his future is away from Old Trafford.

As such, he has no shortage of suitors, despite the “bad attitude” narrative bandied about by various outlets. Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq tried to sign the attacker on loan until the end of the season before the Saudi transfer window closed on Thursday; however, Steven Gerrard’s side couldn’t afford the £50 million asking price that United requested that they would be obligated to pay at the end of the loan tenure.

Days after Sancho criticised Ten Hag’s criticisms of his training performance on social media, Bayern Munich showed their interest in the former Borussia Dortmund star and are planning to approach United before the start of the January transfer window.

Still, the reigning Bundesliga champions may face stiff competition from Dortmund, who could also be looking to tempt Sancho back to Signal Iduna Park and may promise more game-time to beat Bayern to his signature.

Dortmund apparently lodged a loan proposal for their former star last January, which was snubbed by United. Now, the Bundesliga side are set to launch a fresh offer for the player in the next transfer window if things do not improve between him and manager Ten Hag.

Sancho is reportedly determined to continue playing for Manchester United despite being linked with several interested clubs, but last week’s bust-up may prove to be the final nail in the coffin of his United career. It will be interesting to see how this Dortmund rumour unravels in the coming months.
