Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring the situation of Manchester United’s fringe star Jadon Sancho and could make a move for him in January.

According to Fichajes, Bayern Munich are lining up a cut-price January transfer swoop for Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho, with the Red Devils considering offloading the England international in January.

Dubbed a generational talent when emerging at Manchester City’s academy, Sancho departed from England in search of regular first-team football and took the Bundesliga by storm, averaging more than a goal contribution in every game for Borussia Dortmund.

After keeping tabs on him since 2018 and then choosing against a move in 2019 after haggling over his transfer fee, Manchester United finally got their hands on one of the game’s most highly-coveted wingers in July 2021, paying €85 million for his services. But fast-forward two years, and Sancho has gone from being United’s right-wing solution to the shadow of his former self.

He was absent from the Manchester United squad for several months last term, with manager Erik ten Hag sending him away to the Netherlands for rehabilitation. But when he did come back, he often produced anonymous displays, looking short of the confidence, pace, power, and creativity that had made him such a fun player to watch.

After only being given cameo roles in Manchester United’s opening three games of the 2023/24 season, he was completely absent from the squad for the trip to Arsenal. Ten Hag told reporters that Sancho had not trained well when asked why the winger had not been selected in his matchday squad against Arsenal at the weekend. The Dutchman’s comments did not go unnoticed.

In a firm response, Sancho contradicted his manager, taking to Twitter to give an impassioned defence in which he claimed he was a “scapegoat”. This public spat has left the England international in an awkward situation at Old Trafford. And it seems unlikely that he will get any minutes in the team this season, with United backing the manager over the fallout.

With the English transfer window having ending, it is likely that the situation will be resolved between the player and the manager in the coming weeks.

Although there is some speculation of possible interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, Fichajes claims that the player has no intention of leaving the English club at this moment in time. He will stay put at Old Trafford before looking for a new destination in the winter transfer window.

To that end, one of the clubs that could emerge “as the main contender” are Bayern Munich, who were in contact with Sancho’s representatives throughout the summer and “could make a determined effort to sign him” in January. The Bavarians are “confident that Sancho can regain his best level” back in the Bundesliga.

Although Bayern have not yet made any concrete approach, the Bundesliga champions are expected to open talks with Manchester United for Sancho ahead of the opening of the winter transfer window as Thomas Tuchel looks to strengthen his already talented attack even further.

Sancho’s stock has taken a drastic hit since his arrival at Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund, and his market value currently stands at €50 million as per Fichajes. It will be interesting to see how this rumour develops in the coming months, and how much Bayern will be ready to pay for United’s out-of-favour ace.
