According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Eric Dier has held crunch talks with Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy regarding his future at the club. The 29-year-old has not been involved in any of Spurs’ matches so far this season. As a result, he is looking for clarity over his role at the club.
The England international came through the ranks at Sporting CP before joining Spurs back in the summer of 2014. Dier has been a great servant for the club. He started off in the centre of the park and over the years has featured in a number of positions.
Of late, the 29-year-old has featured in the heart of the defence. Last season, he was involved in 42 matches and racked up close to 3,700 minutes. The England international was a key part of their first team as well as the leadership group.
But, a lot has changed since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. The 29-year-old utility man has gone way down the pecking order and has not been involved in any of their five outings so far. Dier has failed to find a place on the bench and is unlikely to have a decent role under the Australian boss.
The Englishman has spent nine years at the club and such a treatment does not really make sense. Dier is not happy with the situation and he has held talks with the club regarding his future. His contract runs out next summer and he has not been offered a new deal yet.
Given the current situation, the 29-year-old could end up being a free agent in 12 months time. Meanwhile, there is interest in his services from the Saudi Pro League. But, their transfer window ends on Thursday at 10 pm BST. As a result, a move at this stage seems a bit unlikely.
With Tottenham offloading Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele to Galatasaray, Dier should find a spot in Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad, and he might even return to the substitute bench as Postecoglou does not have enough cover for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
