Mason Greenwood is reportedly “determined” to return and represent Manchester United again in the future after sealing a shock deadline-day loan move to Getafe.
According to The Sun, Mason Greenwood has not given up on making a controversial return to first-team action at Old Trafford, despite Erik ten Hag’s side announcing that the attacker would never play for the club again.
After an 18-month hiatus owing to allegations of attempted rape and the subsequent trial period, the 21-year-old is set to return to competitive action as he received a last-gasp opportunity to restart his career after Getafe moved in to secure his services in a season-long loan deal on deadline day.
United allowed Greenwood to leave without asking for a loan fee to help speed up negotiations. It is understood that the Manchester giants will also continue to pay a sizeable percentage of his wages during his time in Madrid.
His career turned upside down in January 2022 after leaked images and videos relating to the abuse of a young woman broke the internet. Charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February this year, citing a lack of evidence.
He was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest for the aforementioned alleged crimes. His main issue remains that the law courts might have cleared him, but he still has a case to answer with the court of public opinion. The Red Devils were attempting to have him back in their squad but decided against it following a widespread backlash.
Greenwood has a contract at Old Trafford until 2025 but is not expected to play for the club again after United announced last month that it had been “mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate” for the player to continue his career away from the club in the aftermath of a six-month-long internal investigation into the case.
Despite this, the player “refuses to give up on his dream return” to Old Trafford, as per The Sun’s source. The report claims that the Englishman “wants to repay” United for their faith in him amidst all the backlash and is “determined to prove himself” during his loan spell in Spain as he looks “to force his way back” into Erik ten Hag’s thinking.

It is also said that Manchester United will support Greenwood as he aims to make a Premier League return, whether that will be at Old Trafford or elsewhere. It is also worth noting that the Red Devils are yet to terminate his contract and that it’s a straight loan deal, with the Spanish club not holding any option or obligation to purchase him permanently next summer.
Despite the controversy around him, the one-time England international was garnering interest from various football circles this past summer. Several clubs in the Saudi Pro League have shown interest in landing his signature. However, many in the Middle East expressed reservations about how the potential signing of the youngster could affect the league’s growing image and standing in the football world.
Lazio were also interested in signing Greenwood in the final days of the summer window, but the Italian giants were unable to complete a loan deal, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito slamming United for their lack of cooperation.
