Augsburg are advancing in talks with Tottenham to secure Japhet Tanganga as they close in on a loan agreement with a buy option.

According to Football Insider, Augsburg are closing in on a loan agreement with Tottenham for defender Japhet Tanganga. The 24-year-old is out of favour in north London and part of the list of players the club are actively looking to offload.

Japhet Tanganga had a variety of clubs seeking his signature if the reports were accurate earlier. A host of Italian clubs were seeking the 24-year-old Tottenham man, but now he’s about to join Augsburg in a surprise loan move.

The Bundesliga side are seeking defensive reinforcements after a leaky start to the season; Augsburg have conceded seven goals in the opening two games. They will want a new defender to join in, and to keep the finances in check, a loan move for Tanganga with a potential buy option might do the trick.

Augsburg are now on the verge of reaching an agreement with Tottenham over a loan deal with a potential option to buy next summer. The latter was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who insists the two parties are very close to concluding this move.

Tanganga also has interest from Premier League sides, with Everton reportedly pushing to sign him. However, the level of seriousness may not have been enough to convince the 24-year-old Tottenham man, which may have resulted in him choosing a move to the Bundesliga side.

Luton Town were also keen, as they are on the lookout for a new defender. There have been links to Rob Holding, but their manager dismissed them as rumours. The baffling thing about Tanganga was the interest from Italy, with the Milan clubs and Roma keen at various stages since January.

Tottenham may have wanted a permanent solution to the problem, as they risk having the player back in the squad next summer. With this move, Tanganga can revive his career and play a more regular role elsewhere.

Tottenham will look to cull more players from their bloated side before the transfer deadline. Fellow defender Eric Dier and other well-known names in their squad could also depart before the window shuts.
