Manchester United will reportedly compete with Leeds United to sign 22-year-old English left-back Luke Thomas from Leicester City.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Luke Thomas is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils continue to scour the market for a left-back in the final days of the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Leicester City defender is also a target for Leeds United.

Luke Thomas has been with Leicester City since he was seven years old. The English full-back began his youth career with the Foxes, joining them in 2008. After rising through the ranks at the Midlands club, he made his first-team debut as a 19-year-old in July 2020.

Since then, the 22-year-old has come leaps and bounds, establishing himself as a regular for his club. He even became the first-choice left-back in the 2021/22 season before sharing game time last term. But Thomas is yet to feature for Leicester City in the new campaign, not managing a single minute of game time.

Widespread reports have suggested that Thomas’s lack of game time points to an impending move away from the King Power Stadium. And the young full-back has emerged as a target for two well-known clubs. Manchester United and Leeds United are keen on prising him away from Leicester City.

Thomas has been on Leeds United’s radar for a long time. And even though a transfer to Elland Road will be a sideways move, he is a viable target for the West Yorkshire outfit. With Junior Firpo facing an uncertain future at Leeds United, the Whites need a replacement. And Thomas is an option worth considering.

On the other hand, Manchester United would not have envisioned scouring the market for a left-back this summer. But with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia recovering from long-term injuries, Erik ten Hag does not have a senior left-back in his squad. Several options, including Marc Cucurella, have thus emerged on Manchester United’s radar. And Luke Thomas is also a viable target.

The 22-year-old English defender might be towards the bottom of Manchester United’s wishlist. But with time running out in the summer transfer window, he might quickly become a top target. And it will be interesting to see if he moves to Old Trafford in the coming days.
