Manchester United have reportedly made contact with AS Roma to enquire about the possibility of signing Leonardo Spinazzola.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester United have approached AS Roma over the signing of Italian full-back Leonardo Spinazzola as they seek an emergency replacement for Luke Shaw.

So far this summer, Manchester United have signed Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund. However, with the end of the transfer window approaching, there are still some areas they want to address.

Manchester United have been actively looking for solutions at left-back ever since the news came out of Luke Shaw‘s muscle injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined potentially for several months. With Tyrell Malacia currently absent due to injury as well and Brandon Williams joining Championship side Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season, Erik ten Hag has been left extremely light in that department.

As such, the Red Devils have been linked with various targets for the final few days of the transfer window, such as Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon. Now, Gianluca Di Marzio reckons that AS Roma defender Leonardo Spinazzola is the latest left-back that Manchester United are targeting.

The 30-year-old Italian international is actually right-footed. But he is firmly established as a natural left-back. The Azzurri star impressed in that role at the European Championships in 2021 but later picked up a serious injury that had kept him out of action for a lengthy period of time. And he only returned to action last season for Jose Mourinho’s side after his stay out of action was extended with another injury setback.

Last season, he managed 26 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi and scored two goals, although he was not able to replicate his best form. He has featured in both of the Roma’s Serie A games so far this season.

Spinazzola is in the final year of his contract with Roma, and there are doubts over whether or not he will earn an extension amid growing outside interest, which could be a factor in the event that the Serie A giants opt to let him leave for Manchester United if they receive a convincing offer.

In recent weeks, Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab also expressed their interest in signing the Italian international. But the move did not materialise, and Spinazzola ended up staying with the Giallorossi.
