Fulham ahead of Manchester United in Sergio Reguilon pursuit

Fulham are more advanced than Manchester United in the race to sign 26-year-old Tottenham outcast Sergio Reguilon.

According to Daily Telegraph, Premier League side Fulham are ahead of Manchester United in the race for Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon.

The 26-year-old has fallen out of favour at N-17 and does not appear to have the backing of new manager Ange Postecoglou going forward. This represents a big fall for the Spaniard, who looked top notch before moving to Spurs from Real Madrid in 2020.

Manchester United do not appear to be deterred, given their immediate need for a new-left back. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both out injured, leaving Erik ten Hag short in the position. This is a major weakness in the Red Devils roster as shown by their struggles against Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

The Red Devils have now drawn up a three man shortlist that includes Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso and Reguilon. Fulham are also keen on the Tottenham outcast and are ahead of Manchester United in the race for his signature.

Tottenham are ready to sell the player. But time is running out before the summer transfer window slams shut. Given that the Red Devils only need a temporary solution, it makes sense for them to pursue a loan deal for Reguilon. Whether this will garner Tottenham’s approval or they are seeking a permanent solution remains to be seen.

Manchester United were keen on Reguilon before he moved to Tottenham in 2020. While he failed to develop into a star as expected, the Red Devils have little choice in the matter given their situation.

Fulham under Marco Silva are an ambitious side and will be keen to build upon their promising 2022/23 campaign back in the top flight. Antonee Robinson is the only senior left-back in the club’s roster, and the Englishman struggled to hold his own against Arsenal last weekend.

An upgrade is certainly needed and Reguilon can provide them just that. The Spaniard’s reputation has taken a hit in recent years but he is still an upgrade over what Fulham currently have at their disposal in the position.
