Tottenham Hotspur reportedly lead the race to sign Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson, a target for Chelsea.

Brennan Johnson has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the last few weeks. But a report by 90min has claimed that that Tottenham are currently leading the race to sign the Welshman. Nottingham Forest will demand £50 million to part ways with him.

Johnson was a key player for Nottingham Forest this past season as he scored ten goals across all competitions. He could prove to be a quality acquisition for the North London club if they manage to secure his services.

Spurs need to bring in attacking reinforcements after the departure of Harry Kane, and Johnson has emerged as a viable target for them. Although the 22-year-old is not a centre forward like Kane, he will certainly add goals and creativity to the Spurs attack.

The north London giants should look to invest in a reliable striker as well. Replacing Harry Kane will not be an easy task. So Tottenham should look to invest in multiple players to replace his creative and goals coding output.

Johnson is highly rated in the Premier League, and Chelsea are thought to be keen on him as well. The Blues tried to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, but they have failed to do so. It seems that Johnson is an alternative to the Frenchman.

Chelsea certainly have more financial resources compared to Tottenham. So it remains to be seen whether the North London outfit can beat them to his signature. The 22-year-old needs to play regularly in order to continue his development and fulfil his tremendous potential. A move to Tottenham would thus be ideal for him.

He is likely to get ample game time under Ange Postecoglou, and the Australian manager’s attacking approach could benefit him. On the other hand, Chelsea have a number of quality wingers at their disposal already. Johnson might struggle for regular game time at Stamford Bridge.

The reported £50 million asking price might seem like a premium right now. But both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea can afford it and the investment could prove to be a smart one in the long run. And it will be interesting to see which London club can land him this summer.
