Barcelona are looking to sign 29-year-old Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo before the summer transfer window closes.

According to SPORT, Barcelona have now reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign 29-year-old Portuguese international Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo has found himself out of favour at the Premier League club, and he needs to leave them permanently in order to play regular first-team football. He was linked with Arsenal as well.

Barcelona are looking to add more depth and quality to the full-back department, and they have identified the Portuguese international as the ideal option. Cancelo was on loan at German club Bayern Munich last season, and he could prove to be a useful acquisition for the Blaugrana as well. Apparently, Barcelona will sign him on a loan-to-buy deal.

The 29-year-old was a key player for Manchester City prior to last season, and he will add a new dimension to the Barcelona attack going forward. Cancelo is capable of operating on the right as well as on the left full-back positions, and his versatility will be an added bonus for the Spanish outfit.

Barcelona are going through financial difficulties right now, and they will not be able to spend big money on signings this summer. Cancelo should be an inexpensive acquisition, and he could prove to be a bargain for them.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are looking to bring in their own signings, and the departure of Cancelo will certainly free up some funds for them. The Premier League champions will look to strengthen their side accordingly and build on their performances from last season.

Pep Guardiola’s side managed to win the treble last year, and they will look to compete for major trophies once again. As far as Cancelo is concerned, the Portuguese international has the technical attributes to thrive in La Liga, and he will look to make an immediate impact at his new club.

Barcelona managed to win the league title last season, and they will look to do well in the Champions League this year. Signings like Cancelo will certainly improve them. The 29-year-old knows what it takes to play for big clubs and challenge for major trophies. He should prove to be a superb option for Xavi Hernandez.
