Manchester United have initiated contacts with Bayern Munich to sign Benjamin Pavard, with the player keen on a new challenge.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed talks were ongoing between Manchester United and Bayern Munich for Benjamin Pavard. The versatile right-sided defender is keen on a new challenge away from Munich. He also has a year left on his deal, which could boost the chances for Erik Ten Hag’s men to sign him.

Benjamin Pavard has been in the news since the summer window opened. The Frenchman had long made it evident he sought a new challenge away from Bayern Munich, and he felt he wouldn’t sign a new contract if it became an option.

Bayern could sell him for the right price, but there’s been little interest so far. Manchester City were keen earlier in the scenario they lost Kyle Walker. With that no longer an issue, the 27-year-old World Cup winner has seen little interest, but Manchester United are now interested.

Manchester United’s interest piqued once they agreed on a deal with West Ham to sell Harry Maguire. Options like Jean Clair-Todibo got mentioned alongside Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba. But Erik ten Hag will want to put some thought behind this signing.

The idea of bringing a new defender should have multiple facets to it. Hence they see Pavard as a key target among other choices. The 27-year-old World Cup winner can play as a right back if needed, and if Ten Hag stars him regularly in the position, then the backline becomes stronger.

The Dutchman had wanted to bring a proper full-back for one of their current incumbents, and Pavard might do the trick. Recent reports suggested Manchester United were holding concrete talks. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the same but insisted Bayern are yet to approve.

Talks continue between the two clubs to find an agreement. Given that Pavard only has a year left on his current deal, things could acclerate. Bayern would look to cash in and demand a significant sum, which Manchester United might counter with a low offer.

This transfer could drag on if there are gaps in the valuations of the player. If Pavard pushes on, he could manage to leave Bayern this summer. Manchester United could get a solid international and his experience might help them during this long season.
