Newcastle United looking to steal a march on Tottenham for Edmond Tapsoba

Newcastle United are keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

A report from Football Insider claims that Newcastle are now prepared to hijack Tottenham’s move for Edmond Tapsoba. Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen value the defender at around £50 million.

Tapsoba has been a key player for Bayer Leverkusen since arriving from Vitoria de Guimaraes. And he should prove to be a quality acquisition for Newcastle United if they can get the deal done. The Magpies need to bring in quality players this summer, especially as they are competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Tapsoba certainly has the potential to develop into a top-class defender, and he could be a key player for Newcastle in the years to come. Newcastle did quite well defensively last season, and signing the 24-year-old will only improve them further.

They will be up against top-class forwards in the Champions League on a weekly basis and need to tighten up at the back after their defensive performances regressed towards the end of last term. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Burkina Faso international as well.

Spurs were quite vulnerable defensively last season, and they conceded 63 goals in the league. They will have to sign quality central defenders in order to get back into the top four and secure UEFA Champions League qualification.

Tapsoba would certainly improve them, and he could form a quality partnership with Cristian Romero. The defender is reportedly valued at £50 million, and it will be interesting to see if the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham are prepared to pay that kind of money for him.

The 24-year-old is yet to enter his peak years and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. The £50 million asking price might seem like a premium right now but the player certainly has the potential to justify the investment. Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in the world and they have the financial muscle to get the deal done.

It remains to be seen whether they formalise their interest with a concrete proposal in the next few days. Newcastle recently spent big money on Sandro Tonali to improve their midfield options, and signings like Tapsoba will certainly help them compete for trophies.
