Loren Juarros, sporting director of Malaga CF, has confirmed Real Madrid’s interest in 17-year-old Spanish defensive sensation Izan Merino.

A report by AS has quoted comments by Loren Juarros of Malaga. The Spanish club’s sporting director has revealed that Izan Merino is a target for Real Madrid. But they will look to keep hold of the 17-year-old Spanish defensive sensation beyond the summer transfer window.

Juarros said, “Real Madrid were interested in Izan quite some time ago and we are stopping them. Izan is a boy with deep roots at the club and we are going to do everything we can to stop him leaving. We want him to stay and Málaga are not considering any other option. Real Madrid have expressed interest, but we’ve never thought about him leaving here.”

Izan Merino is one of the best young prospects in his homeland. A centre-back by trade, the 17-year-old has risen through the ranks at the Andalusian club. And he has also broken into the Spanish under-17 team, turning out three times thus far. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with several high-profile clubs, including Real Madrid, setting their sights on him.

The Merengues are renowned for constantly scouring the market for prodigious young prospects. They do not shy away from pouncing on opportunities outside Europe either, landing Endrick, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo Goes, among others, in their formative years. Meanwhile, Real Madrid recently showed interest in Victor Hugo.

Closer to home, several Spanish prospects are on Real Madrid’s radar. And recent reports have linked Los Blancos with Ivan Fresneda. And Izan Merino has now emerged as a target for Real Madrid over a possible move this summer.

Considering the 17-year-old Spanish defensive sensation turns out for Malaga’s reserve side. So it is reasonable to assume that he will represent Real Madrid Castilla in the 2023/24 season. But a move is not set in stone, with Malaga trying to keep Merino at the club beyond the summer transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can convince Malaga to part ways with the teenage sensation. The opportunity to represent Los Blancos, even if at the reserve team level, will be attractive.
