Aston Villa recently contacted Sevilla for 26-year-old World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel, although formal talks are yet to begin.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Gonzalo Montiel is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The 26-year-old might not have a future at Sevilla beyond the summer transfer window. And the Villans have established loose contacts for the World Cup-winning full-back.
Gonzalo Montiel is a graduate of the River Plate Academy and has spent most of his professional career at the famous club. But his stint at Estadio Mas Monumental ended nearly two years ago when he moved to Europe for the first time. And the Argentine international joined Sevilla, where he has blown hot and cold in the last two seasons.
The 26-year-old has made 71 appearances thus far for Sevilla, chipping in with two goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Montiel scored the winning penalty as Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup at France’s expense. But following the high of the World Cup triumph, his stock has fallen. And the player faces an uncertain future at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
The World Cup winner might not have a future at the Andalusian club beyond the summer transfer window. So he is looking for a new club, although very few suitors have emerged in the race to sign him. But Aston Villa might look to launch the offensive for Montiel, with Monchi looking at his former club for the next signing.
The Villans have been active in the summer transfer window, signing three top-class players. Youri Tielemans kicked things off by arriving on a Bosman move before Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby joined Aston Villa. They remain in the market for more signings, with Matej Kovar recently emerging as a target.
But Aston Villa might also look to sign a right-back following Ashley Young’s departure as a free agent. Young’s exit has left Unai Emery with Matty Cash as the only recognised right-back in the squad. So it behoves Aston Villa to invest in another player in the position. And the Villans have established loose contacts with Sevilla for Gonzalo Montiel.

The move is still in its infancy, with talks yet to get underway between Aston Villa and Sevilla. But Montiel is a viable target for the Midlands club. And it will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old World Cup winner is the next well-known name to arrive at Villa Park.
