Newcastle United have reportedly been credited with an interest in Flamengo’s highly-rated midfielder Victor Hugo, and are prepared to pay €24 million to land the 19-year-old this summer.

According to Brazilian outlet Bolavip, Newcastle United are eyeing a potential summer transfer for promising Flamengo midfielder Victor Hugo. And they are expected to table an opening bid worth €24 million in the coming days.

The 19-year-old central midfielder only broke into the Flamengo senior setup last year, but could soon be in line for his big move to Europe. Despite his tender years, he has made a big impact and established himself as a regular starter in Jorge Sampaoli’s side. He has already made 63 appearances for Flamengo’s first team and grabbed six goals in that time.

Hugo’s meteoric rise and growing reputation in South America have not gone unnoticed in Europe, earning him links to Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent times. Brazilian outlet Bolavip, though, suggests it’s Newcastle who are prepared to make an offer for the teenage sensation before the competition actually arrives.

The Brazilian market has reportedly been explored by the Magpies in recent months, and they have been linked with several players from some of the country’s biggest clubs.

The likes of Matheus Franca and Angelo Gabriel have both reportedly been closely watched by Newcastle representatives. Hugo is said to be the latest Brazilian star on their radar, and they could now step up their initial interest. The report claims a €24 million bid might be on the cards.

It is evident that he possesses the potential to develop into a quality central midfielder. He is the archetypal Brazilian midfielder, with bundles of technical ability and excellent close control coupled with good passing range. The tenacious enforcer also possesses explosiveness and physical power, which will suit Eddie Howe’s system at Newcastle, where No. 8s are tasked with pressing the opposition until their last breath.

While immediate impact might not be expected from the 19-year-old in the demanding Premier League, the Magpies view him as a valuable long-term project. Given his considerable upside, Victor Hugo could be a key piece in Newcastle’s plans for the future.

That being said, Bolavip are not one of the most reliable sources in Brazil. So it remains to be seen if these rumours have any substance or if the player’s agent is trying to use Newcastle’s name to drum up interest from other European clubs in his client.
