West Ham United are interested in signing Harry Maguire from Manchester United but have seen their opening bid get rejected.

A report from The Guardian claims that Manchester United have knocked back an offer from West Ham United for Harry Maguire. The Red Devils are set to take a major loss on the £80 million they paid to sign the English defender.

Maguire has not been able to live up to the expectations at Old Trafford since his big-money £80 million move from Leicester City. And Manchester United are prepared to cash in on him this summer, albeit for a sizeable fee.

The English defender was recently stripped of the captaincy role, and there have been rumours that he could look to leave the club this summer in search of regular playing time. The 30-year-old dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford last season, and he needs to leave in order to play more often.

West Ham could provide him with the opportunity to play regular first team football in the Premier League. With the European Championships coming up next year, Maguire will be hoping to cement his place in the England starting lineup.

He knows that he will need to play regularly at the stage of his career, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up. The defender has been quite error prone since his move to Manchester United, and he has been criticised heavily.

The transfer has clearly not worked out for either party, and Manchester United should look to cut their losses on him and invest in a better central defender. Meanwhile, West Ham need to improve defensively, and they believe that Maguire could be a useful option for them. Recent reports have claimed they are the front-runners to secure his services.

Prior to his move to Manchester United, the 30-year-old was regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. And he could be useful asset for David Moyes, if he manages to regain that form and confidence.

The Hammers have the finances to get the deal done, especially after the departure of Declan Rice. So it remains to be seen whether they decide to come back with an improved offer to sign the England international. Maguire will look to get his career back on track once again and West Ham could present him with an interesting opportunity.
