Tottenham keen on Ivan Toney

Tottenham could eye up a January move for Ivan Toney as a possible replacement for Harry Kane, who could leave in this window.

According to Football Transfers, Ivan Toney has emerged as a target for Tottenham as they could make a move for the Brentford star. The 27-year-old Premier League forward is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules but becomes available in mid-January.

If there is a player who comes close to Harry Kane’s profile, it’s Ivan Toney. It’s quite unfortunate for the Brentford forward to have played so well but disregarded for England due to the presence of the Tottenham star.

It’s not to say Kane influenced Toney being out, but their profiles are so alike it’s pointless to keep them both in the same team or even in the squad. Some would argue otherwise. But now Tottenham are keen on the 27-year-old Premier League forward despite his long-term ban from football.

Toney is currently serving an eight-month suspension from footballing activities after breaching gambling rules. The FA charged the 27-year-old Premier League forward with the ban, and he will also only resume training in September.

As things stand, Toney will only start playing on January 16, and Spurs are keen to bolster their squad with the forward. They could make a move in January as a possible replacement for Kane in their team. Tottenham could sell the England captain if the pressure keeps rising and the striker does not indicate signing a new deal.

This summer window represents the best time for Spurs to cash in, as Bayern Munich keep chasing the striker with intent. Toney is now considered the viable replacement, and the striker would suit Tottenham in the long run.

They were also interested in Dusan Vlahovic as a replacement for Kane. But the Serb seems closer to joining PSG instead. Tottenham wouldn’t have entered the strikers’ market without the Kane situation. They have Richarlison as a No.9 option, but they need to fill the void left by the England skipper.

As for Toney, stylistically, he fits the mould and might show openness towards taking up a bigger challenge than Brentford. Chelsea are also reportedly keen on the 27-year-old forward and ready to wait until January to make the move.

Had it not been for the ban, many top clubs would have chased Toney in the current window. Unfortunately for him, there’s a dire need for strikers at many top clubs in the continent. However, he must wait until the winter window to see what is in store.
