Liverpool optimistic of winning Romeo Lavia race

Liverpool are confident of securing the signature of Southampton star Romeo Lavia

According to Football Insider, Premier League giants, Liverpool are confident of winning the transfer race for Southampton star Romeo Lavia in the ongoing summer window.

The 19-year-old was one of Southampton’s best players in an otherwise forgettable season that saw them suffer the ignominy of relegation from the Premier League. This has seen several teams alerted to his talents and this could see him return to the top flight sooner rather than later.

Reinforcing the midfield has always been a priority for the Reds this summer and so far Jurgen Klopp and Co have enjoyed a promising start. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have both arrived at Anfield over the last few weeks and significantly improve the options in terms of ball carrying and attack.

However, Fabinho and Stefan Bajcetic remain the only defensive midfielders on the Reds’ roster. The Brazilian has lost his mojo while the latter is still young and is far from ready for being a regular.

Lavia is of the same age as Bajcetic but has more experience marshaling a Premier League midfield. While he is still rough around the edges, he could develop by playing alongside Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, and Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool are facing competition from both Arsenal and Chelsea for the Belgian star. More so, Southampton’s £50 million asking price continues to be a bone of contention as far as negotiations go. The Reds, however, remain confident and believe the player’s willingness to move to Anfield can swing the tide in their favour.

This works well for Jurgen Klopp who is always keen to bring in players who are keen on the cause. Lavia certainly has a high ceiling and could future-proof the position for the next decade.

With pre-season fast approaching, it is in the club’s best interests to make a decision on the transfer as soon as possible. Adding Lavia to a midfield that also has Mac Allister and Szoboszlai should give the Reds enough a solid base to build on for years to come.
