Barcelona are reportedly hoping to re-sign 28-year-old Spanish midfielder Gerard Gumbau on a free transfer this summer.

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona are hoping to re-sign their former player Gerard Gumbau on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old Spanish midfielder’s contract with Elche has expired.

The 28-year-old is a versatile midfielder capable of operating as a central midfielder, as well as a defensive midfielder. He could prove to be a useful acquisition on a free transfer. Gumbau is familiar with the Barcelona style of play and he knows the club well. He should be able to settle in quickly and make an immediate impact.

Barcelona need to add more quality and depth to their squad in order to do well across multiple competitions. So snapping up quality squad options on free transfers could prove to be a masterstroke from the Blaugrana.

The reigning La Liga champions are going through financial difficulties. So they will not be able to spend big money on signings. Barcelona have thus had to cool interest in top targets like Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich.

Picking up bargains should be a top priority for them this summer. Barcelona have already secured the services of Ilkay Gündogan on a free transfer from Manchester City, and they are thought to be closing in on former midfielder Oriol Romeu as well.

The opportunity to play for his boyhood club will be an exciting option for Gumbau, and the 28-year-old will be looking to finalise the move back to the Catalan club as soon as possible. The midfielder has previously made three appearances for the first team in La Liga before leaving the club in 2016.

It remains to be seen whether he can establish himself as an important player under Xavi Hernandez next season. The likes of Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, and Gundogan are all likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order. So the Spanish midfielder will have to work hard for his chances.

However, Barcelona will be hoping to do well in the European competitions, and they need a deeper squad. Players like Gumbau are likely to get ample opportunities across multiple competitions, and it remains to be seen whether he can make an impression.
