And the 22-year-old Dutch international defender should prove to be a quality acquisition for Spurs if they manage to get the deal across the line.
Tottenham were quite poor defensively last season, conceding 63 goals in the Premier League. They will have to improve defensively if they want to get back into the top four and qualify for the Champions League once again. And Tottenham have been in talks to sign van de Ven.
The 22-year-old is not the only player linked with a move to Tottenham as they seek defensive reinforcements. Apparently, Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba is on their shortlist as well. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can secure an agreement with Wolfsburg now.
The Bundesliga club will look to demand a premium for their key defender, with a figure of around €40 million mentioned in the media. Tottenham certainly have the financial resources to afford the player and he could prove to be a solid, long-term addition for them.
The youngster is still only 22 and is likely to improve with coaching and experience. Regular football in the Premier League will help him improve as a player and it could accelerate his development. Tottenham have appointed a new manager in Ange Postecoglou, and the Australian did well to nurture talented young players during his time at Celtic.
He could play a key role in the development of the Dutch defender as well. It is no surprise that the player has already agreed terms with Tottenham. The opportunity to play in the Premier League will be an attractive option for most players. And van de Ven will look to showcase his qualities at the highest level now.
Tottenham have a quality squad at their disposal, and they should be able to challenge for trophies next year with a couple of intelligent additions. As for Liverpool, it will be interesting to see if the Reds turn their attention to any other centre-back.
