Liverpool are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Bayern Munich midfield star Ryan Gravenberch this summer.

According to Fichajes, Premier League giants Liverpool are steadily advancing in talks with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for Ryan Gravenberch.

The Dutch midfielder moved to Bavaria last summer following a sensational season with Ajax Amsterdam. Touted to be among the best young midfielders in world football, a lot was expected of Gravenerch, whose move to the Allianz Arena was considered a coup.

However, the 21-year-old has struggled to make much of an impact and has seen his development stagnate. Unless the situation improves next season, he is better off moving elsewhere, where he can get his career back on track.

Liverpool, for one, are in the market for midfielders. And in Jurgen Klopp, they have a manager who is a keen fan of the Dutchman. The German boss is pushing for the 21-year-old’s signature, as talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage.

The Reds have already signed World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister and are on the verge of completing a deal for Hungarian superstar Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig. Signing the duo gives the Reds a shot in the arm regarding their midfield reshuffle, giving them an excellent base to add to in the coming weeks this summer.

Securing Gravenberch will further future-proof the Liverpool midfield, giving Klopp and co. the foundations to build a side for the upcoming decade. While his ability cannot be questioned, it is debatable if the Dutchman is what Liverpool need at this moment in time.

Mac Allister will help the Reds recycle the possession, while Szoboszlai can carry the ball forward, adding to the offensive moves. Given Fabinho’s fall from grace, what the Merseysiders need at the moment is a defensive midfielder.

They continue to be linked to both Khephrem Thuram and Romeo Lavia, two players who are better suited to the balance the side is seeking in the middle of the park. Both players are also physically in a better position to take on the challenges put forward by the Premier League.

Landing Gravenberch certainly adds strength in depth to the Liverpool midfield, but given their signings so far, the Dutchman should be seen as more of a luxury than a necessity. The coming weeks will give us a clearer picture of what is exactly cooking at Anfield this summer.
