Tottenham are reportedly close to sealing a move for James Maddison and beating competition from Newcastle United.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham are inching closer to sealing a move for James Maddison ahead of rivals Newcastle United. Spurs have been on the England international’s trail since the season finished, and now they can beat the competition to make him their marquee summer arrival.

James Maddison remains one of the in-demand players in this transfer window. The England international personally had a good season despite Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship. The £60 million-rated playmaker managed to score ten times and provide nine assists, which has generated plenty of interest.

Additionally, he will have a year left on his Leicester City contract, which could allow interested clubs to pounce for his signature. Despite earlier rumblings from other Premier League sides, Tottenham and Newcastle United were the keenest of all clubs.

For a few weeks, Spurs and Newcastle United have battled neck to neck for the English playmaker. Both teams were unwilling to pay Leicester’s asking price for Maddison. The Foxes reportedly want at least £60 million for him but are unlikely to achieve it.

Moreover, they will need finances to manage at least a season in the Championship and selling their prized asset will come across as a wise decision. Hence, there is optimism from Tottenham’s side to close to deal now for around £40 million and bring Maddison to north London.

Maddison is reportedly keen to join Tottenham, but Newcastle continue to circle. The Magpies have focused on completing a move for Sandro Tonali, allowing Spurs to steal the march for the Leicester City playmaker.

Newcastle United might still make a late dash and have Champions League football to entice him. However, Spurs may have the upper hand in negotiations so far, as they are even close to agreeing on personal terms with the Leicester star.

Maddison will become a solid addition for Tottenham, who have been missing a creative spark in their attack. His ability to take up multiple positions around the central striker potentially makes him a valuable asset for Spurs, as he could act as a key player for them in the upcoming season.
