Tottenham are looking to sign James Maddison from Leicester City, with the London club currently in pole position to secure his services.

James Maddison has been linked with Manchester United and Newcastle United in recent weeks. But a report from The Guardian claims that Tottenham are now ahead of the two Premier League clubs in their pursuit of the 26-year-old Leicester City playmaker.

Maddison has proven himself to be a quality attacking midfielder in the English top flight, and he could improve Tottenham immensely. Players like Harry Kane have had to drop deep and create goalscoring opportunities for himself this past season. And the England international clearly needs more help and support from his teammates.

Signing a quality creative midfielder should be a top priority for Tottenham, and Maddison has emerged as a viable target for Spurs. The 26-year-old is well-settled in the Premier League, and he will be able to make an immediate impact at the North London club as well.

Leicester City have been relegated to the championship, and a player of his quality deserves to play in the top flight. There is no doubt that the 26-year-old will move on this summer. And moving to Tottenham would be the ideal next step in his career.

He would get to play for a better team and will also look to compete for trophies with the London club. Spurs will be able to provide him with ample first-team action, and a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could help him cement his place England’s starting lineup as well.

Tottenham have quality midfielders at their disposal. But they are lacking in creativity and goals. Maddison would certainly fix that problem and add a new dimension to their midfield. Although the 26-year-old is a central attacking midfielder, he can operate in the wide areas as well, and his versatility will be an added bonus.

Maddison scored ten goals and picked up nine assists across in the Premier League last season, and he could establish himself as an indispensable asset for Ange Postecoglou. The Australian manager prefers free-flowing attacking football, and he needs creative midfielders like Maddison to execute his style of play.

The Leicester City playmaker could be an important member of the Tottenham first team next season. Given the fact that the midfielder is in the final year of his contract, and Leicester are now relegated to the championship, the midfielder could be available for a cut-price deal, and Tottenham will be hoping to make the most of his situation and secure his signature.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United and Manchester United need creative midfielders as well. And the two clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on Dominik Szoboszlai and Mason Mount respectively. But they are also keen on signing Maddison. However, with Tottenham front-runners to sign the 26-year-old, Manchester United and Newcastle United have an uphill task in his pursuit.
