Newcastle United have reportedly been linked with a surprise move for Arthur Melo despite his flop show at Liverpool.

Arthur Melo was on loan at Liverpool this past season. But he left the Merseyside club without making a single Premier League appearance for the club. According to Tutto Juve, Newcastle United are ready to make a move for the Liverpool flop this summer. Juventus will demand an expensive loan fee and a purchase option of €20 million to offload him.

Arthur was brought in to add depth and quality to the Liverpool midfield. But the Brazilian international spent most of his time at Anfield on the sidelines. It appears that Newcastle United are ready to provide him with another opportunity to showcase his quality in the Premier League.

There is no doubt that Newcastle need to bring in midfield reinforcements. And Arthur could be a useful option for them if he can stay fit. The 26-year-old Brazilian was highly rated when he joined Barcelona. But his development has stalled in recent seasons.

He has not been able to fulfil his potential and the signing would be an underwhelming one for the Newcastle fans. The Magpies will have to bring in quality midfielders this summer, and they have been linked with players like Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Barella.

Bruno Guimaraes is the only top-quality midfielder at the club and Newcastle will have to bring in more quality now that they are in the Champions League. The Premier League side will have to compete with the European elite on a weekly basis. So they will need to strengthen the squad during the summer transfer window.

Arthur has the quality to make a difference in the middle of the park for Newcastle. But his availability issues are a huge concern. There is no doubt that the transfer would be a major gamble, and it would be quite surprising if Newcastle decided to pay up for him. Perhaps another loan move would be ideal for all parties.

The midfielder clearly does not have a future at Juventus, and the Italian outfit will want to get rid of him permanently. It remains to be seen whether they can negotiate a permanent sale to Newcastle United this summer. But Juventus will likely demand an expensive loan fee and a €20 million purchase option to offload Arthur.

The Magpies are one of the richest clubs in the world, and they have the resources to sign the best players. They should look to aim higher and bring in someone who will make an instant impact at the club next season
