Arsenal keeping tabs on Aleix Garrido

Arsenal will reportedly look to sign 19-year-old Spanish midfield sensation Aleix Garrido from Barcelona this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Aleix Garrido is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are closely monitoring the 19-year-old Barcelona midfield sensation. But the teenage wonderkid is unlikely to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

Aleix Garrido is a native of Ripoli, a town in Girona, Catalonia. And he has been a part of Barcelona’s famed La Masia setup since 2012, when he was eight years old. Since then, the Spanish midfield prodigy has come leaps and bounds, even turning out 11 times for Barcelona Atletic.

The 19-year-old has also made his first-team debut for Barcelona, appearing off the bench for a cameo against Elche. But he was most impressive in the UEFA Youth League, amassing one goal and six assists in six appearances. And Garrido’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal among his prospective suitors.

Mikel Arteta has unleashed a youth revolution at Arsenal during his tenure thus far. The Spanish manager has focused on grooming the Arsenal squad in his image, with Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey being two rare experienced squad members. And the Gunners have scoured the market for young prospects instead of veterans.

Garrido is the latest prodigious prospect to emerge on Arsenal’s radar. And while the Gunners are focusing their efforts to sign Declan Rice, they can do with multiple midfield signings this summer. That is because recent reports have linked Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga with moves away from the Emirates.

In addition, Jorginho faces an uncertain future at the North London club amid interest from Serie A clubs. So signing a teenage prospect like Aleix Garrido will complement Declan Rice well. So the 19-year-old Barcelona midfield sensation has emerged as a viable target for Arsenal. But a summer move will unlikely materialise.

Garrido signed a new contract with Barcelona in April, with his deal running until June 30, 2025. And with Xavi Hernandez admiring the 19-year-old, his prospects with Barcelona seem bright. So Arsenal will lose the race to secure the services of a second Barcelona wonderkid after Ilias Akhomach.
