Manchester United, Tottenham hesitant to pay £40 million to sign David Raya

Manchester United and Tottenham do not pay Brentford’s asking price of £40 million for Spanish goalkeeper David Raya.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Brentford will demand £40 million to part ways with David Raya. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Spanish goalkeeper. But they do not want to meet Brentford’s asking price to secure his services in the summer transfer window.

David Raya has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League since joining Brentford. The 27-year-old arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium from Blackburn Rovers in July 2019. And he has risen in English football alongside the Bees in the last four years.

The Spanish goalkeeper has turned out 161 times thus far for Brentford, keeping 54 clean sheets. But Raya’s stint with the London club will end this summer, as he wants a new challenge. Meanwhile, the Bees have zeroed in on his replacement, with Mark Flekken set to join the team. And the shot-stopper’s situation has captured the attention of Manchester United and Tottenham.

Manchester United will likely seal an agreement with David de Gea over a new contract in a few weeks. While conventional wisdom suggests the Red Devils should part ways with the Spaniard and sign a goalkeeper who fits Erik ten Hag’s system, the long-serving shot-stopper is not going anywhere. But Manchester United will sign a competitor for de Gea this summer.

David Raya has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United. Recent reports have also claimed the 27-year-old is ready to move to Old Trafford. But Manchester United will not shell out the £40 million Brentford will demand to sell him. The same goes for Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham will part ways with Hugo Lloris this summer, with the Frenchman ready for a new adventure. And Raya is the priority target for Tottenham to replace Lloris this summer. But the North London giants are not ready to pay more than £20 million for the Spanish goalkeeper, let alone shell out £40 million.

With Manchester United and Tottenham not ready to meet Brentford’s valuation, it will be interesting to see if the Bees lower their demands from £40 million. For now, a deal in the region of £40 million seems unlikely.
