Manchester City agree personal terms with Mateo Kovacic

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are keen on having Mateo Kovacic in their ranks ahead of next season. And the Premier League champions have already agreed personal terms with the 29-year-old Chelsea midfielder.

Kovacic has been a great servant for Chelsea ever since he joined them back in the summer of 2018. Initially, Chelsea loaned him in from Real Madrid for a year. But on the back of impressive performances, the Blues signed the Croat on a permanent basis.

While he still remains a vital cog in their first team setup, the 29-year-old’s future has been uncertain ever since they started signing numerous players. And Chelsea might part ways with him in the summer transfer window.

The Blues have spent a fortune on acquiring new players. And their new managers’ first priority is to offload everyone that is surplus to requirements. Kovacic is likely to be a part of the mass offload, despite being involved in 37 matches and racking up close to 2,500 minutes in the 2022/23 season.

The 29-year-old’s contract at Chelsea runs out in the summer of 2024. The Blues are not interested in extending his stay at the club. And as a result, they are looking to offload him in the summer. They do not intend of risking losing out on him for free next season.

With Chelsea ready to sell, Manchester City have been keeping a close eye on the Croatian international. Pep Guardiola’s men are looking for a potential replacement for İlkay Gundogan whose contract runs out in the summer. If the German international leaves, Kovacic will be an ideal replacement. Even if he does not, the arrival of the Croat will surely strengthen their squad.
