Espanyol striker Joselu is reportedly close to completing a loan move to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, Joselu is on the verge of joining Real Madrid. The Spanish striker has a relegation clause in his contract, which has activated following Espanyol’s drop to the Segunda Division. And the Merengues are closing in on completing a loan move for him.

Joselu is a late bloomer who has found his calling after returning to Spain nearly four years ago. The Spaniard’s stint in England did not work out, and the move to Alaves in 2019 did wonders for his career. And he has been excellent in the ongoing campaign after joining Espanyol last summer.

While the Parakeets have struggled to make their mark this season and will go down to the Segunda Division, the 33-year-old has been a rare shining light for them. And a tally of 17 goals and four assists in 38 games is impressive. But Joselu’s stint with Espanyol will likely end this summer amid emerging interest from Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are in the market for at least one striker, with Mariano Diaz likely to leave. The 29-year-old wants to resurrect his stuttering career and will seek greener pastures in the summer transfer window. So Real Madrid will resort to the market to seek a replacement for Mariano in the coming weeks.

Joselu has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid. And recent reports have claimed that talks over completing a deal in the summer transfer window have advanced. Real Madrid’s efforts have seemingly borne the fruits, with Los Blancos on the verge of sealing a loan deal for the 33-year-old.

The 17-goal striker has a clause in his contract that enables him to leave in case of Espanyol’s relegation. So Joselu’s departure from the RCDE Stadium is seemingly a formality, with Real Madrid being his next destination. And Los Blancos will pay his wages in the 2023/24 season.

Espanyol will hope to secure a quick promotion to La Liga in the 2023/24 season. And if that happens, Joselu can become their talisman in the 2024/25 season after returning from Real Madrid. But for now, a summer move to the Santiago Bernabeu is seemingly on the cards.
