Chelsea to begin talks with Southampton over £40 million-rated midfielder Romeo Lavia, with Liverpool also keen on the Belgian star.
According to Rudy Galetti via Give Me Sport, Chelsea are keen to sign Romeo Lavia this summer. The Stamford Bridge outfit are set to begin talks with Southampton for the £40 million-rated Liverpool target. Todd Boehly remains wary of competition for the Belgian and wants to move swiftly ahead of their rivals.
Chelsea are already planning ahead of the summer window as Todd Boehly targets another smashing transfer spree. Since the club’s takeover last summer, the Chelsea owner has spent over £600 million in the two windows. While the Blues endured a season to forget, they will not play European football next season.
Despite the potential slashing of revenues due to continental football, Boehly will continue his plans. Among those are bringing in a new striker and possibly two midfielders. Chelsea may lose Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and possibly Mason Mount in the close season.
Those departures will need reinforcements, and Chelsea plans to target many names. Those include Sporting CP’s Manuel Ugarte, with the Blues willing to pay his release clause. It was thought they might bring in one midfielder in the window to complement Enzo Fernandez, but journalist Rudy Galetti insists they might sign two.
Galetti said, “With the potential outgoing transfers of Loftus-Cheek and Kovacic, Chelsea are looking for two new midfielders.
“Romeo Lavia is at the top of their list and talks with Southampton have already started.”
Chelsea are set to begin talks with Southampton to make a move for Lavia. The report says £40 million could suffice in this market for the midfielder who cost the Saints £14 million last summer. Manchester City are also interested and has a buy-back clause for £40 million, which will activate in 2024.
However, Chelsea wants to move fast ahead of their rivals but faces realistic threats from Jurgen Klopp’s men. Liverpool are trying to sign Lavia this summer, with the £40 million-rated star one of the players on their midfield shortlist.
Klopp wants to bring at least two midfielders, with the club closing in on Alexis Mac Allister. As for Lavia, they might provide European football next season and a project for the longer term. Chelsea will hope they can lure the young Belgian to London and convince him with their own project.
