Atletico Madrid will reportedly look to sign Spanish international veteran Jordi Alba from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Jordi Alba is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchonerosi are keeping tabs on the situation of the Barcelona veteran. And while Alba intends to honour his contract, Barcelona will look to offload him ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Jordi Alba has been one of the best full-backs in the world since rejoining Barcelona from Valencia over a decade ago. The 34-year-old previously spent most of his formative years in La Masia before rising in prominence at Valencia CF. But Alba’s stock skyrocketed after returning to Barcelona.

The Spanish international has turned out over 450 times for Barcelona, chipping in with 27 goals and 99 assists. But Alba’s performance levels have dropped significantly in the last few years. And Barcelona will happily part ways with the veteran defender in the summer transfer window. Such a situation has captured the attention of Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid will enter the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window. That is because Reinildo Mandava is a long-term absentee for Los Rojiblancos. And with the Mozambican defender recovering from a knee injury, Atletico Madrid will need a replacement heading into the summer transfer window.

With Reinildo being a promising full-back, Atletico Madrid can do with a short-term replacement for him. Alba has thus emerged as a viable target for the Colchoneros, especially if he leaves Barcelona as a free agent. So it is hardly surprising that the Madrid giants are closely monitoring the veteran defender’s situation at Spotify Camp Nou.

But Alba wants to honour his Barcelona contract and remain at Camp Nou until the end of the 2023/24 season. But with the Blaugrana on the verge of tying Alejandro Balde to a new long-term contract, they do not need to keep Alba, especially with Marcos Alonso also in Xavi Hernandez’s squad.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona can successfully offload Alba in the summer transfer window. And if that happens, Atletico Madrid might be his next destination, although Al-Hilal will look to reunite him with Lionel Messi.
