Aston Villa are keen on Giovani Lo Celso as the Argentine will return to Tottenham from his loan spell at Villarreal.

Fabrizio Romano has reported on Aston Villa’s interest in signing Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham in the summer. Unai Emery wants to bring in a central midfielder that suits his style, with the 27-year-old Tottenham ace one of the targets he intends to sign in the next window.

Aston Villa are already planning their summer targets as the season draws to a close. A win over Tottenham at the weekend kept them in the hunt for a European finish with two games left on the calendar. Irrespective of what they might achieve this season, the Midlands side have progressed incredibly under Unai Emery.

Aston Villa have ambitious plans to back Emery in the transfer window and have some high-profile names on their list. Barcelona’s Ferran Torres and Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic are among those targets. But Emery remains keen to bring a solid midfielder to bolster his ranks.

On paper, Aston Villa have a healthy list of midfielders in the current squad. But one or two of them might depart. Boubacar Kamara and Leander Dendoncer are two names that have played less frequently under Emery and might see the exit door.

Emery had wanted to reunite with Matteo Guendouzi for some time. But key target Kalvin Phillips could reject a move. The latter wants to stay at Manchester City and fight for his place, leading Villa to look at alternative targets.

Real Sociedad duo Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi also feature in their ideas, among other targets. Now, Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso emerges on their shortlist, with the 27-year-old Tottenham ace set to return to north London.

Lo Celso has spent the season on loan at Villarreal, which was an extension to a previous stint that lasted six months. The latter had great success attached to it, as the 27-year-old Tottenham ace won the Europa League with the Spanish side coached by none other than Emery.

Emery also pushed Villarreal to re-sign him last summer and now has an interest in reuniting with the 27-year-old Tottenham ace. When he returns to north London, his future remains in doubt. The Argentine will want to understand who Spurs bring in as their new manager and maybe make a final decision.

Tottenham would like to sell him for a reasonable price, and with Villa keen, the two clubs could do business. Lo Celso is a player known by Emery and will feel the Argentine will improve his squad. He also packs plenty of experience, which the Spaniard wants from a new midfielder.
