Ferland Mendy could leave Real Madrid for a meagre £17.5 million, with Premier League giants Arsenal and Tottenham interested.

According to Daily Mirror, Arsenal and Tottenham can sign Ferland Mendy for only £17.5 million. Real Madrid want to sell the left-back as they look to free up space and funds in their squads for new recruits. The north London sides are keen on a new left-back, with the Frenchman’s price likely to appeal their transfer policies.

Ferland Mendy was a good signing when Zinedine Zidane coached Real Madrid. Even after the French legend’s departure, Carlo Ancelotti used the left-back consistently. But this season has been a real rollercoaster for him.

Injuries and loss of form have affected Mendy’s participation with the first team. The Real Madrid manager has been unable to use him much due to fitness concerns. And when available, Ancelotti has often used him sporadically. Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has played as a left-back in important games, which shows the lack of faith in Mendy.

The Real Madrid defender could depart the club in the summer, with the Spanish giants keen on raising money to sell unwanted players. Mendy certainly falls in that category with two years left on his deal. The La Liga side reportedly sought a high fee earlier. But the recent report has claimed Mendy could leave for £17.5 million.

That price range may appeal to the likes of Arsenal or Newcastle United, with both clubs keen on the Real Madrid defender. As per the report, Tottenham might also be in the race, with his agents set to hold talks with Spurs in the coming days.

However, Mendy wants to continue playing with a Champions League squad. And Tottenham cannot offer it. Spurs have a problem in the left-back role, with veteran Ivan Perisic often playing there ahead of Ryan Sessegnon. Spurs like to play with wing-backs, which may not suit the 27-year-old Real Madrid defender.

That leaves the door open for Arsenal to make the move. Mikel Arteta may have to dip into the market for a new left-back if Kieran Tierney leaves the club. The Scot has lost his place in the starting lineup to Oleksandr Zinchenko and will be keen to play regularly.

Arsenal could open the doors for Tierney to leave if they receive a generous offer. Newcastle are one of the clubs heavily linked with a move. Hence, the links with Mendy have emerged in the past few weeks. And if the £17.5 million price tag turns out to be accurate, then the Gunners might consider an approach.

However, Mendy’s injury record may come in the way of Arsenal’s ideas to sign the Real Madrid defender. Arteta might look for a younger option with a better profile and one that can play the inverted role the manager so overly prefers.
