Sergino Dest is reportedly inching closer to joining Bundesliga club Union Berlin on loan in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Sergino Dest is the subject of interest from Union Berlin. The Bundesliga outfit will sign the 22-year-old Barcelona defender on loan in the summer transfer window. But a deal is contingent on Die Eisernen qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Sergino Dest was a promising young prospect during his days at Ajax. He was the first-choice right-back for the Dutch giants during his teenage years. So Barcelona would have hoped to see the USMNT international end the long search for Dani Alves’s heir. But that has not been the case thus far.

The 22-year-old was decent in his debut season but fell down the pecking order last term. And with Xavi Hernandez not fancying Dest much, Barcelona loaned him out to AC Milan. But the player has struggled to make his mark, managing only 635 minutes of game time across 14 outings.

Dest’s fortunes will unlikely improve at Spotify Camp Nou in the summer transfer window. And Barcelona will look to offload the 22-year-old defender in the coming months. Several clubs, including a few Premier League outfits, have shown interest in the youngster. But his next destination is seemingly Union Berlin.

Die Eisernen’s progress under Urs Fischer has been remarkable. And they are currently third on the Bundesliga table, two points clear of fifth-placed RB Leipzig. While the top-four race is seemingly leaving no room for error, Union Berlin will fancy qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. And if that happens, they will launch the offensive for several highly-rated players.

One of their targets will be Sergino Dest, who has become a leading candidate to bolster their squad. And the report by Mundo Deportivo points to the Bundesliga club being in the pole position to sign him on loan. But Union Berlin will follow through on the interest if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Urs Fischer’s charges have their fortunes in their own hands. And if they clinch a top-four finish, Dest will likely join them on loan for the 2023/24 season. And Barcelona will hope to see the 22-year-old defender enjoying a successful stint at Union Berlin to offload him for good next year.
