Newcastle United are intent on signing Merih Demiral in the summer as Eddie Howe targets a new central defender.

According to Tutto Juve, Merih Demiral is a serious target for Newcastle United ahead of the summer window. The Atalanta centre-back could leave if reasonable offers arrive, while Eddie Howe targets a new defender to shore up his backline.

Newcastle United are already planning to bolster their squad. But the possible qualification in the Champions League could make them re-think their policy. That said, the Magpies will look for superior players in the market, with Eddie Howe keen to strengthen several positions.

The central defence is an area Howe wants more options in, with some of the existing fringe stars set to leave. Sven Botman and Fabian Schar remain the preferred partnership at the back. And they have done an admirable job in a team that has conceded the fewest goals this season.

Considering their participation in next season’s Champions League, Howe would need more depth in the department. At least one new star must arrive, with several options discussed. Newcastle are increasingly looking at the Italian market for solutions, with Torino’s Perr Schuurs as one of their targets.

Gleison Bremer is another name on their list, but there are doubts about whether Juventus would consider a sale so soon. The Brazilian remains a target for many top clubs, but he seems settled in Turin after a season here, and the Serie A side considers him very important.

The Magpies may have already switched their attention towards Atalanta star Merih Demiral. The 25-year-old Serie A defender has been a player of interest to many teams after some impressive performances with the Serie A side.

Atalanta decided to take up the option to sign him permanently from Juventus after a successful loan spell. The Turin giants reportedly have a sell-on clause in the contract, which entitles them to 10% of any future sale of the 25-year-old Serie A defender.

Newcastle United are reportedly pushing to sign Demiral in the summer. The defender has a formidable presence for Atalanta despite losing his starting spot recently. Howe might see the 25-year-old Serie A defender as a good addition, but much will depend on the competition.

Signing a centre-back seems imperative for Newcastle in the summer. They might see Demiral as an alternative to some of the big targets on their list. But the 25-year-old Serie A defender may have far less competition than anticipated, making the path for the Magpies easier.
