Newcastle United have enquired about Lovro Majer ahead of the summer window as the Croatian remains keen to exit Stade Rennes.

According to Foot Mercato, Lovro Majer is a target for Newcastle United in the summer. The Magpies have made enquiries about the 25-year-old Ligue 1 playmaker’s availability, as the Croatian remains keen to depart Stade Rennes in the next window.

Lovro Majer was one of the names on the list of many top clubs during the January window. The Croatian had only returned from a fabulous World Cup campaign in Qatar, playing a huge role in their third-placed finish. His performances before the grand tournament were also the reason why many teams lined up to make a move.

There was heavy interest from Atletico Madrid, and at one stage, Majer seemed destined to sign up for the Rojiblancos. Instead, Stade Rennes blocked any potential transfer, and the Croatian remained in France for the time being.

Since January, his performance levels have considerably dipped, and he is no longer an automatic starter for Rennes. Yet, there’s belief in his talent, and he feels he could regain his form in a new environment. Rennes reportedly want €40 million for the 25-year-old Ligue 1 playmaker, something Premier League sides can afford.

There’s no shortage of interest, and Atletico Madrid could revisit their previous approach. However, Tottenham prioritises a move for Majer, but Newcastle United could rekindle their pursuit of the 25-year-old Ligue 1 playmaker.

The Magpies are keen on signing a creative playmaker in the summer to add quality to their attacking lineup. They plan to strengthen the team as they anticipate Champions League football. Adding quality depth remains firmly on Eddie Howe’s agenda, and a few names have been mentioned.

James Maddison remains one of their priorities, but if the cost and competition fall in the way, Majer could become an alternative. The 25-year-old Ligue 1 playmaker has enough experience to make the grade in England and may fall in Newcastle’s price range.

Going by his recent form, Newcastle may have a point if they negotiate to lower his asking price. However, with the money invested in him two years ago and the sell-on clause with Dinamo, Zagreb would see Rennes demand at least €40 million.

Majer could succeed in England with the right attitude to adapt to the game. Newcastle have a conducive atmosphere as Howe radiates confidence in this team that remains hungry to achieve big things.
