Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly compete with Newcastle United in the race to sign 27-year-old Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Ferland Mendy is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 champions want to bolster their left-back options in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Real Madrid defender is also a target for Newcastle United.

Ferland Mendy has endured a rollercoaster ride since joining Real Madrid from Lyon in July 2019. 27-year-old was one of the best full-backs in La Liga in the first two years of his stint with Los Blancos. But his performance levels have dropped in the last 18 months due to persistent injury troubles.

The French international has been in and out of the side and is currently on the sidelines due to a muscle injury. Mendy has thus managed only 25 appearances this term for Real Madrid across all competitions thus far. But the player’s fitness woes have not deterred his prospective suitors, with Newcastle United and PSG keen on signing him.

Newcastle United will likely enter the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window. That is because Matt Targett faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park after becoming a bit-part player this season. In addition, Dan Burn is primarily defensive-minded and does not carry a threat in the final third.

So it behoves Newcastle United to scour the market for a left-back who can add a new layer to the offensive gameplay. Mendy has thus emerged as a viable target, with the Real Madrid defender at the peak of his powers. But Newcastle United will face stiff competition from PSG in the race to sign the 27-year-old.

At PSG, Juan Bernat seemingly does not have a long and fruitful future at Parc des Princes. And while Nuno Mendes is a long-term option for Les Parisiens, the Ligue 1 champions need another left-back. Ferland Mendy is thus a defensive reinforcement worth considering for PSG.
