Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister has been highly impressive for Brighton & Hove Albion this season and he helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well. A report from Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool and Manchester United will begin talks to sign the midfielder soon.

Liverpool are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, and a technically gifted player like Alexis Mac Allister would be a superb acquisition for them. They could use someone like him, especially with Naby Keita leaving the club in the summer.

The former RB Leipzig midfielder will move on as a free agent, and Liverpool will have to replace him adequately. Keita is the only technically-gifted midfielder at the club apart from Thiago Alcantara. So Liverpool need someone like Mac Allister, who can help control the game’s tempo, create opportunities and bypass the press.

The 24-year-old is well-settled in the Premier League and could make an immediate impact at Anfield. Mac Allister has proven that he deserves to play for a big club. And a move to Liverpool would be the ideal step up in his career.

However, the interest from Manchester United could complicate Liverpool’s chances of signing the player. That said, recent reports have claimed the two bitter rivals are the front-runners to sign the Argentine midfielder, whose market value is €42 million.

Liverpool are unlikely to secure Champions League qualification at the end of the season, and they do not have the resources to compete with Manchester United either. It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can swoop in and secure the World Cup winner’s services. Manchester United are in need of midfield reinforcements as well.

The Red Devils signed Casemiro from Real Madrid at the start of the season, and the Brazilian has made an immediate impact since moving to Old Trafford. Manchester United will now have to find a quality partner for the Brazilian. The Argentine international thus seems like the ideal acquisition.

Mac Allister will help Manchester United dominate proceedings in the middle of the park, and his style of play suits Erik ten Hag’s philosophy as well. Manchester United are well placed to secure Champions League qualification, and they could be favourites to sign the player during the summer transfer window. But Brighton will likely demand much more than the World Cup winner’s market value of €42 million.
